A long lunch is a welcome tradition in Italy. Outside the crowded tourist areas, shops tend to close for lunch between 1:00 and 4:00 pm (13:00-16:00). Restaurants remain open to serve everyone, and a few offer a prix fixe meal along with the regular menu.

Many restaurants are family owned and operated, like Trattoria Della Fortuna. They offer a prix fixe lunch they call the “worker’s lunch .”

Trattoria Della Fortuna is tucked away in the castle of Jesi and well known to locals. I was lucky enough to be traveling with tour guides (Cathy and Enrico at Solebello) who knew about this gem. The meal included wine, bottled water, antipasto, prima, second dish, dessert, Italian coffee, and Lemoncello for 15 euro ($18).

The price of food is so reasonable at the grocery stores and in restaurants. And there is no tipping, and servers are typically salaried.
The older gentleman in the photos is the owner. He was lovely and clearly enjoyed his work as he talked with us about life and family. They served fantastic mushroom ravioli!
