These simple words, ‘Buongiorno, sono Americana, prompted many conversations. People would chat away in Italian, none of which I fully understood, and we would laugh and show affection with a touch, a kiss-kiss, or a hug as if we were old friends catching up. The Italians I encountered were warm, patient and welcoming.
As I walked by the guy installing the street lamp and said hello, I’m from America, his face lit up as he grabbed my hand and pulled me into his shop. My friends (and translators) were down the alleyway. Cathy looked back in time to watch me whisked into the building.

Walking through the castle of Jesi, we passed two men who were installing a street lamp above a shop door. It was a tight squeeze between the men and the small van parked in front. As I passed, I announced, “Buongiorno, sono Americana” (hello, I’m American), which I had been doing since I landed in Italy.

A Golden Cadillac is considered an after dinner drink made with Galliano, white crème de cacao, and cream.

Pour it all into a shaker, add ice, cover and shake. Strain into a martini glass.

And there it was – a bar dedicated to Jack Daniels and the Rat Pack. From my ‘growing up in California and having been drunk on Jack Daniels’ perspective, the display was both darling and hysterical. (I wouldn’t do a shot of Jack today for $100. For $1000? Sure, just make sure the antacids are at hand.)

The bar was the Golden Cadillac. Stefano, the owner, was so passionate about the whiskey, his decor, and the Rat Pack era. He had high hopes to visit the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, one day.
